A Visit with a friend..

Terra d'Oro Zinfandel
Terra d’Oro Zinfandel

Part of the Siloam Service is to provide each guest with a bottle of our private label wine, sometimes guests will schedule a private wine tasting.  We had a guest recently who scheduled a private wine tasting with food pairing; we sampled lovely wines and paired the wine with different cheeses, crackers, dried and fresh fruit ; and some chocolates, and nuts.  We sat on the back patio near the Siloam Pond and chatted, enjoyed the wine, and food, and each other’s company.  It is an added bonus that as an Innkeeper,  you can become friends with guests.

This individual guest was visiting from California and brought us a bottle of Terra d’Oro Zinfandel; this was such a nice gesture and a surprise.  The wine was from Amador County, we thoroughly enjoyed the wine and have since done a little research on the Terra d’Oro Winery.  We thought our visitors would be interested in the following:

2006 Terra d’Oro Zinfandel

Terra d’Oro 2006 Zinfandel is a shining example of Amador Zinfandel. We don’t have to coerce character and spice from the fruit, nor do we beat it back. Dark berry fruit is generously seasoned with charcteristic Shenandoah Spice. The different oak styles lend molases, vanilla and cinnamon to a balanced lingering finish. Sweet and spicy are two classic culinary combinations. Our chefs match many of our favorite dishes with this classic zinfandel, ranging from barbeque short ribs in chipotle dipping sauce to pan-seared filet mignon….or just an old fashioned juicy cheeseburger

While the origin of Zinfandel has long been debated, a UC Davis research group put other theories to rest when they proved that Zinfandel originated in Croatia as an obscure grape called Crljenak, growing near the DalmationCoast. How and when it arrived in the New World remains a mystery…how it arrived in California we know. Thirsty pioneers brought zinfandel cuttings from the east coast here to the Mother Lode during the gold rush of the nineteenth century. At Terra d’Oro and in Amador County, Zinfandel is what we do best. Shallow topsoils, granite hardpan, hot summer days, and cool sumer nights make a fabulous home for our favorite varietal. Hand selected every year from our many lots of Zin, Terra d’Oro Zinfandel is the flagship of our Zinfandel program. We head train and spur prune the TDO vineyards for maximum sunlight and controlled crop.

Just when you think you have seen it all….

An Alpaca on Old Belfair Highway
An Alpaca on Old Belfair Highway

It wasn’t that long ago that we posted a blog about peacocks, cougars and bears…oh my!!  And now, it’s Alpacas (they are cute) !!  Yesterday, on our way home we were stopped by an Alpaca running down the middle of the Old Belfair Highway.  You see some crazy stuff in your lifetime- but along with the peacock at the post office this was an unusual sight.

Kitsap County Sheriffs were on the scene trying to get the Alpaca home I suppose.  That’s one of the cool things about a rural community it isn’t everyday you see the Sheriff tracking down the “bad boy” Alpaca.

You really ought to come out to Siloam Retreat & Wine Shop; explore the Hood Canal and Seabeck Area to see what you see.

New & Improved

Bordeaux Room
Bordeaux Room

One of our goals at Siloam is to set the standard for service.  Guest comfort is at the top of the list in everything we do.  We recently added a business center that will allow guest use of a PC, Printer, portable display screen, and a workstation, as well as continuing to offer wireless throughout the property.  Being business travelers, helps us identify corporate needs while traveling.  A business trip is much more productive when the traveler is comfortable and has the tools needed to conduct business.

The primary business in our area is Naval Base Kitsap:  http://www.cnic.navy.mil/Kitsap/index.htm Siloam Retreat is located minutes from all gates within (NBK) Naval Base Kitsap.  Whether you are visiting enlisted family members, or whether you have business with NBK, or whether you would like to plan a NBK event at Siloam Retreat & Wine Shop; you can trust Siloam for quality service.

In addition to the business center, we have also added another guest room to accommodate larger groups.  Adding the Cabernet Room allows for overnight accommodations for up to 12-14 people.  We continue to make renovations to the Wine Shop which we hope to have ready in time for holiday parties.  The Wine Shop is a private event venue for up to 50 people; stay tuned to the blog for more information and updates on the Wine Shop.

Spontaneity~Last Drops of Summer

Siloam in the Snow
Siloam in the Snow

It’s early to talk about the holidays; but for some reason, maybe it’s commercialism, as soon as school starts we begin to think about the holidays- Tis’ the Season.  The season for thinking about the holidays.

Siloam is absolutely beautiful through the change of the season, first we will be encased in color from the foliage which creates a whole new lighting hue throughout the Retreat House then we will begin to see the first signs of frost and then snow, once it snows Siloam Retreat House becomes a snow globe, so private, so calm and quiet, you cannot see the main road from the house nor any other houses.  If you like the snow, a winter retreat to Siloam is in order.

But back to the title of this blog; “Spontaneity”- we are still in the Summer Season afterall and Summer is the time for Spontaneity- this is the last of the Summer Weekends where Siloam is offering a Private Wine Tasting included with a weekend stay.  Be spontaneous, get-away for one last hurrah, enjoy a private wine tasting and a private weekend retreat.  We would love to have you as our guests!!

New Wine ~

Melange Blanc
Melange Blanc

Keeping up with the language of wine is fascinating-WineShop At Home recently released a Melange Blanc; a blend of Sauvingnon Blanc and Muscat.

A Melange- a blend (mixture) for pronunciation click here:  http://forvo.com/word/melange/

Bordeaux-style wines are celebrated throughout the world and our Lumiére de Vie (Fr: Light of Life) wines give you this famed style of winemaking with a modern edge. The Bordeaux region of France has created some of the most famous varietals in the world — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Our Lumiére de Vie wines are carefully crafted to balance the Bordeaux-style of winemaking with modern finesse and a thoroughly fresh perspective. Raise your glass to the light of life!

This white blend is a combination of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and the juice was fermented cold to preserve the delicate aromas. This wine is made in a lightly sweet style with around 0.7% residual sugar. This wine was aged entirely in stainless steel tanks. The wine has not undergone malo-lactic fermentation in an effort to preserve the crispness. This wine should be consumed within 2 years of release.

This 2008 Lumiére de Vie Mélange Blanc has aromas of ripe apple and pear with hints of flowers and fresh mint. The flavors are only lightly sweet with a balanced crisp finish. The mouth-feel is medium to heavy for a white wine but the flavors are balanced. Enjoy this wine with a fruit appetizer, seafood salads, Havarti cheese or a tomato bisque soup.
